International Print Exchange 2014
14th October to 10th November 2014

This exhibition celebrates their 6th exchange, showcasing the prints received this year produced by 86 printmakers from all over the world!

The IPE was founded by and is dedicated to David Michael Johnson. In 2009, David sent out our original call for interest to printmakers from all over the world on 28 February 2009, with the hopes that a few would be interested in a small studio based in the United Kingdom organising such an event. Within just 24 hours he received over 400 positive emails from national and international printmakers. Such a response surpassed even their expectations and prompted the beginning of our first International Print Exchange in 2009.

David was diagnosed with terminal cancer shortly after our IPE 2009 was completed, and after a precious few months with his family around him, he sadly passed away on 4 June 2010. Even though David is no longer with us, they have continued his legacy and every year they dedicate each exchange to his memory.

This year they
have received 86 print editions from printmakers all over the world. To coincide with this exhibition they have produced a publication featuring all prints that took part in IPE 2014. This book, along with each print that took part this year will be available to view and purchase throughout the duration of this exhibition.

This exhibition will be in the Banks Mill Studios (foyer), 71 Bridge Street, Derby, DE1 3LB and will be open to the public:
Week days 11am - 5pm;
Saturday 18 October and Sat 1 & Sun 2 Nov 11am-3pm

I've only ever heard of Pauline Quirke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauline_Quirke) as a actor in Birds of a Feather so it was a surprise to hear about The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts: creating thrills and skills for life.

The Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts
From Pauline herself:
I started The Pauline Quirke Academy (PQA) because when I was younger some of my happiest times were spent in drama classes. Looking back I can see that the skills I learnt and the friends I made were really where it all started for me, so I wanted to re-create that opportunity for a new generation of young people.
Since 2007, PQA has given 4-18 year olds an outstanding training in performing arts in an environment that is both friendly and rewarding. With training in all areas of the arts – including film & television, FREE Trinity College London exams, regular Creative Stages Reports to monitor progress, specialist masterclasses, our brilliant agency for professional work and the chance to see yourself on the big screen of your local cinema as well as perform in London’s West End, my team and I think we’ve put together a really different performing arts experience. I hope we can welcome you into the PQA family soon.

Our nearest academy is held at Derby Moor Community Sports College, Moorway Lane, Littleover, Derby, DE23 2FS
On Saturdays 9.45 til 1.00pm
Poppets (presumably the younger group) is 10.00 til 11.30am

LIFE IS FOR LEARNING

u3a logo
The University of the Third Age (U3A) movement is a unique and existing organisation which provides, through its U3As, life-enhancing and life-changing opportunities.  Retired and semi-retired people come together and learn together, not for qualifications, but for it sown reward: the sheer joy of discovery!

Members share their skills and life experiences, the learners teach and the teachers learn, and there is no distinction between them.

The U3A movement is supported by its national organisation, the Third Age Trust.  See: http://www.u3a.org.uk/

I have recently joined the Derby branch of this organisation.

A group meeting in 2010There are several active groups here in Derby: from Art Appreciation to Walks; from Internet and Email for Beginners to Everyday Science.  And each month more groups are starting: this month it's Gardening and also Crafts.

We had our inaugural Crafts meeting today when several people came.  We've now planned what we're going to get up to in the months before Christmas.  It's very much a group run by the members, for the members, with everyone having a say.  We have all learnt different crafts, so it's going to be fun sharing our expertise and getting encouragement to finish our UFOs (unfinished objects)!

On the last Thursday of each month there's a branch Monthly Meeting with notices and a talk.  This month the talk's "Quaker Peg", an unusual life, with George Drury.

Lawn Aviary
Last week we went on a coach trip to the Birmingham Botanical Garden (http://www.birminghambotanicalgardens.org.uk/), somewhere we'd never have got round to visiting on our own and Soho House Museum (http://www.bmag.org.uk/soho-house).  I believe that next month's trip is to Bletchley Park.

Summer walk
So if you've nothing to do, come along to the U3A here in Derby and from now on there'll never be a dull moment!

What's happening with the clock tower at The Spot?

Time's Up? Derby's clock tower in The Spot is slated for demolition only 21 years after it was put up. The council wants to level the area as part of a plan to make space for public events and a market. Maxwell Craven from Derby Civic Society says he's astonished at the decision.
