peoples-grocer

Walking past today, I noticed that Jack Rabbit's Kitchen in Queen Street is looking for an experienced barista.

Incidentally, this cafe is a great place to eat and to meet friends.  It's in the Cathedral Quarter, in fact not far from the Cathedral itself.  They serve freshly cooked, home-made food, and have a great deli department.

There are lots of windows so it's interesting to look out and see the world go by.  This means that those seats can be a bit hot in summer and rather chilly in the winter, which I noticed someone was moaning about on TripAdviser.   The answer - sit away from the window!
Also several people have expressed disappointment that not everything is on the menu always available.  Perhaps a price to pay for being served the freshest produce?

One person was bemoaning the fact that food is sometimes served on wooden platters, saying it was unhygienic.  Obviously this person is unaware of just how hygienic wood is (see: http://commonsensehome.com/never-do-to-your-cutting-board/).

Apart from that most other people on TripAdviser have been absolutely delighted to have found such a great to place to eat.  For menues see: http://www.jackrabbitskitchen.co.uk/our-menus/

Feeding the birds in winter

During the winter months, food sources for our wild birds start to fizzle out. Natural vegetation sources will have whittled away with the disappearance of autumn, and most insects will have reduced in numbers until the spring. With the steady loss of natural food sources over the years, birds have come to rely on supplimentary food provided by us in our gardens.

Although it is correct to assume that birds need help most throughout the harsh winter months, Britain's birds actually benefit from our garden supplementary food sources all year round. So if you would like to see more birds enjoy your garden, what a better time to start providing food then now!

The RSPB has many sources to help you learn more about feeding the birds in your garden, including what you should feed them. Whether you want to encourage certain bird species into your garden, or would just like to help boost the development of them all, the RSPB souces above are packed full of information to help you choose what food to provide. As a brief overview, see Preloved's guide to bird feed below!

Note from Derby City Council:

Update on Moorways Sports Complex
Moorways Sports Centre is due to close on 31 March 2015. You will still have use of our other facilities available at Queen's Leisure Centre and Springwood Leisure Centre which incude two gyms, group exercise programme, indoor cycling classes, childrens activities, swimming pool, racket sports and lots more. Find out more here.
As part of the council’s budget consultation process it is currently consulting on a proposal to also close Moorways Swimming Pool as part of budget cuts for 2015/16. If you would like to feedback on this proposal complete the online budget consultation feedback form.
DERBY CUTS: Moorways and the Riverlights
From 38 Degrees:
While we agree that Moorways Pool is old and in need of repair, we urge the council to postpone any closure until a replacement facility is ready.

Why is this important?

Swimming is an essential skill that can save lives, promote better health, and be an enjoyable hobby for all people, of any age, gender, or cultural background. For example, disabled people with limited land movement particularly find swimming an essential activity.

If this pool closes, the sole remaining one is far too small to cope with everyone who would wish to use it, services would have to be limited there, to allow for lessons, clubs, and a reasonable amount of time still allocated to public use.
Derby is a city of approx 250,000 people, one public swimming pool in town is not enough.

There has been other options and suggestions made by local people, but they feel that their opinions are being ignored.
