Friends of Cathedral Music - Safeguarding a priceless heritage

I picked up a leaflet about this group when in Derby Cathedral last week:
The unique tradition of English church music sung daily in cathedrals across our land is a jewel in the crown of our heritage.  The Friends of Cathedral Music provides much-needed additional finance to supplement the high cost of this priceless cultural endeavour which is otherwise borne by the music Foundations themselves.

The purpose of FMC is to:
  • Safeguard our priceless heritage of cathedral music and support a living tradition.
  • Increase public awareness and appreciation of cathedral music.
  • Encourage high standards in choral and organ music.
  • Raise money by subscriptions, donations and legacies for choirs in need.
Their Actions: since its foundation in 1956 they have:
  • Given over £2 million to support Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedral, church and collegiate chapel choirs in the UK and overseas.
  • Endowed many choristerships.
  • Ensured the continued existence of a choir.
  • Worked to maintain the cathedral tradition of choral worship.
See website for details of UK Cathedrals, service times, grants to cathedrals, recordings, news and events (http://fcm.org.uk/).

People joining receive a welcome pack, magazines, guide to cathedral services and festivals, opportunity to attend national and local gatherings at magnificent cathedrals (they are all magnificent!), meet others with shared interest in cathedral music, enjoy talks and master classes, watch choirs rehearsing and know that you will be actively helping to safeguard our priceless heritage of cathedral music.

FCM is based at 27 Old Gloucester Street, London, WC2N 3AX.
Registered Charity No 285121.

What's on at Derby Cathedral

I went for a walk round Derby Cathedral last week with the baby - something to do and she loved the stained glass windows and wrought iron work.   I picked up a leaflet, a sort of 'what's on' this summer and here are some of the details:

St Nicholas Church has lots going on
Today I was handed a leaflet about the Church Women's Fellowship:

They meet on the first Wednesday of the month in the room at the back of the church, from 2.15pm to 3.30pm.  At present, all members are in the over 60 age group but they welcome interested ladies of all ages.

At the meetings, they have an opening hymn and prayer, an invited speaker, a cup of tea and time to chat.

Coming up this year are:

  • 3 September: Neil Crofts from Hackwood Farm will talk about how he and his wife converted a rundown farm at Radbourne into the thriving cafe and farm shop that you may well have visited.
  • 1 October: Graham and Judy White will talk about how they developed a beautiful NGS garden from scratch.
  • 5 November: Bob Illingworth will share his passion for trains and talk about the Royal trains.

There is a charge of £2 for visitors and all are welcome.
