Proposed new homes in Allestree

We had a letter through the post yesterday from Saadia Davis, Philip Hickson and Roy Webb, local councillors here in Derby.  This was to tell us about a proposal to build 400 new houses in Allestree, and to invite us to attend an exhibition on 10 July giving more information about this project.   Here is what the letter sent by Catesby Estates Ltd to Derby City Council, dated 30 June said:

the proposed area of new housing
As you may be aware, Catesbury Estates Ltd plan to bring forward an application to build up to 400 new homes at Land off Kedleston Road and Memorial Road, on the edge of Allestree.  The site is located immediately to the west of Kedleston road, fro Memorial Road in the south approximately as far north as Askerfield Avenue.

It is important that residents have the opportunity to view and comment on the proposals before they are finalised, so that we can take those views into account before a planning application is submitted.  We will be holding a public exhibition, where residents will be able to view the proposals and discuss them with members of the project team.  The exhibition will take place from 2pm - 8pm on Thursday 10 July at The Royal British Legion, 39 Cornhill, Allestree, Derby DE22 2FS.

I hope that you will be able to join us there.  In the meantime, you will find more information about the proposals on the project website:
http://www.kedlestonroad.co.uk/.

It's wonderful to think that new homes are being built for people but is the area up to coping with the extra housing?  However, here doesn't seem to be any talk about improving the infrastructure: schools, health centres, shops, transport links.

One of our local MPs, Pauline Latham OBE, has this to say:

Pauline Latham: Why I shall be opposing latest development in Kedleston Road, Allestree

By Pauline Latham

THIS week I met with representatives from the Catesby Property Group who are proposing a housing development on the land fronting on to Kedleston Road in Allestree. The development is to deliver 350-400 homes, for which planning permission will be lodged with Amber Valley Borough Council in the autumn.
There will be a public consultation by Catesby Property Group in July and residents can also give feedback on the website www.kedlestonroad.co.uk.
I, like many local residents feel that the approval of this application would cause serious problems in the area. The development of the green fields of the Kedleston Estate on which the site sits would set a precedent for other developers. It could also mean that a further application taking the development up to the turning towards Kedleston Hall is likely to follow.
The development is likely to have a detrimental impact on Kedleston Hall. Even if planting helps to screen the housing from the immediate environment, its presence will be felt by the Hall.
