allestree park turtle pond 2014 06 14 38Yesterday I joined some of the Friends of Allestree Park (foap*) in starting to weed the flower beds around the Turtle Pond.

Apparently Derby City Council wanted to get rid of the flower beds - presumably for cost reasons - and incorporate the beds into the general lawn area around the beds.

We're so pleased that the Council was persuaded to keep the flower beds, but they don't want the responsibility of looking after them.

This is where foap comes in.  Although there are nine people on the committee and quite a few members of the Friends of Allestree Park, it isn't always easy to find people able and willing to help carry out the jobs needed.

The beds were planted with wild flower seeds but unfortunately some of the plants have rather taken over and stifled the others.

It was fun being able to start weeding these beds, although it'll need a few more sessions to remove the unwanted plants.  We're hoping to get together again next Thursday evening (at 5pm) to have another session working our way through the beds.   I'll try and remember to take some photos to put on here.

Everyone is very friendly and it was amazing what we achieved in just over an hour.

BARD IN THE BARN
Henry IV part II

It is the city of London, at the turn of the 15th century. Join them at The Bear's Head, Cheapside, where rich and poor let down their hair, sing, drink and make merry together.

At the Royal Court, Henry IV is ill and weak.  he has spent his reign fighting plots and revolts.  He is tired but cannot sleep; ready to die but fears for his future kingdom.

Now is the time for his eldest son, Prince Hal, to leave his idle life and prepare to take the Crown.  But Hal is an irresolute youth more interested in drinking than ruling.

Will the reigning royals fall to the rebels or will the future King Henry V find his true destiny?
